Halloween party!

  • 3 min reading time

It's almost that time again... On October 31st, the annual Halloween party is celebrated! In the United States, Canada, Ireland and England an incredibly popular party, but in the Netherlands we think about it much less.

Especially in the United States, Halloween is an important holiday. People prepare for weeks in advance, such as carving pumpkins and choosing their Halloween costume. On Halloween night, children go door to door with the familiar cry “trick or treat”, asking for a candy or a joke. This is a bit like the Dutch St. Martin's Day.

What is Halloween?

Halloween stands for the evening before All Saints' Day and is the corruption of the English 'all-hallow-even'. The festival was brought to America by Irish immigrants in the 19th century, where it has been celebrated extensively ever since. During Halloween on October 31, various events are celebrated. The festival has its origins in the New Year's Eve of the Celts. Celts are tribes that lived before the beginning of our era and commemorated the dead during their New Year's Eve celebration. Many years later, people visited cemeteries to burn candles for deceased people. They chased away evil spirits with the orange pumpkins. Nowadays, Halloween is mainly celebrated as a reason to dress up and throw Halloween-themed parties.

Halloween is a great reason to party

Some primary and secondary schools in the Netherlands do pay attention to Halloween. For example, children are allowed to dress up for Halloween or school parties are given with a Halloween theme. Is your birthday in October or November? Then this is also a great reason to throw a party with a Halloween theme! Let all your guests dress up and decorate your house with typical Halloween decorations.

What can't be missed at your Halloween party?

Orange and black are the colours that go with Halloween. The colour orange of course stands for pumpkins and the autumn season, in which the holiday takes place. The colour black stands for darkness. During Halloween you can therefore decorate your house beautifully in black and orange colours. Furthermore, there are a number of party supplies that should definitely not be missing at a Halloween party:

  1. Hollowed out pumpkins
Of course, they really can't be missed, because that's what Halloween is known for. No time to carve pumpkins yourself? Then choose pumpkin lanterns !

  2. Skeletons
Of course you want to scare your guests a little bit. That is why skeletons are a must at a Halloween party. Hang up the skeletons, such as the hanging puppet Grimreaper . Hang it in a place where people do not expect it to increase the frightening effect.

  3. Creepy accessories
There are also plenty of small Halloween decoration accessories that make the party even more scary. For example, place some laboratory jars on the table and hang up some fake blood decorations .

  4. Halloween snacks and drinks
A party is of course not complete without good food and drinks. At Halloween you want to go all out with scary dishes, such as Halloween punch and spider cookies. Also original and fun: stuffed eggs that look like eyes. You can make it as scary as you want.

Finally, it is of course very important that it is as dark as possible. Place some candles and tea lights to make it a bit cozier. If you are afraid of fire hazard, you can always buy battery-operated lights!

What kind of Halloween costume do you wear?
